While we sometimes think of this technology like the Internet or the Smart Grid, it is really more like the StarTAC, a closed-loop data system that can split water in California while you’re out kayaking or monitor temperatures in your home with your thermostat as your only source of data. That’s not to say it won’t be valuable — everything in the StarTAC system is a valuable asset.
The farther out and faster it can operate, the more valuable the asset. Augmented reality (AR) refers to computer-generated imagery of an environment on top of an environment that has real-world features. An example might be a video game where the grounds and buildings have realistic virtual grass and trees, or a vehicle where reality and computer-generated graphics merge to boost the realism of the ride. Examples include virtual reality, in which virtual objects merge with real objects and enhance the information presented to the user, and mixed reality, which combines elements of augmented reality with conventional reality. AR currently delivers experiences that are limited to virtual reality and mixed reality headsets such as Microsoft HoloLens and Sony HoloLens.

Most VRs currently require a lot of setups and use a lot of virtual reality software. This setup and the high level of computer processing required limits the use of VR and hold it back in terms of ubiquity. While these early attempts are still in the early stages of development and are prone to bugs, it looks like major adoption of VR headsets will occur in the next few years.
